It's the start of a long weekend here at Steep Hill and the energy on the lake is notably joyful. Friends and family are arriving, boats are bubbling by and good times are officially underway.
It's weekends like these that remind us just how lucky we are to be here full-time. Even if that permanency entails more work than relaxation, which at the moment it definitely does.
June was a whirlwind month of indoor and outdoor projects, ordering materials and making decisions for the the rebuild, putting the finishing touches on the cabin and gardening galore.
As we end the month with our tools down for a few days, here are some of the June project highlights here at Steep Hill:
Kitchen Garden Covers - The hydrangea hoops worked out so well that we decided to try the same approach on the kitchen garden. We're super happy with how easy, cost-effective and functional they are. Plus, we can sleep at night knowing the deer won't eat everything. Video coming soon!
Dahlia Garden - We planted over 60 dahlias in the new raised planters we installed this spring. Then we built custom brackets to run twine for stalk support as they get tall. Hoping for heaps of blooms later this summer.
Staircase - Meanwhile, inside the cottage, we built out the staircase. Dave came up with some brilliant strategies to create a spectacular result. These will get treads and risers yet but so far the stairs are a joy to use.
2nd Floor Framing - Before the heating and cooling systems could go in we needed to finish the upstairs framing. We ended up making a couple of last minute changes that we're very excited about!
Cabin Cabinetry - The time finally came to finish the cabin cabinets. The workshop had been rammed with insulation for the cabin but with that cleared out Dave could get into this very exciting project.
Guest Ready Boathouse - Another space that had been playing storage unit for too long is the boathouse. It's still partially home to overstock from the cottage but it's also looking very cute and inviting for guests.
Wild Visitors - While the boathouse is ready for human visitors, there have been lots of wild ones already. We saw this baby snapping turtle pass by (no bigger than a hockey puck), a moose meandering up from the lake and even caught a black bear snooping around. You can see him in the latest video.
